UP is medium-sized non-profit research and education establishment located in Potsdam, Germany, and maintained by the State of Brandenburg. The university is not only the largest institution of tertiary education in the state but also its most important public research centre. It has a strong Faculty of Science that is integrated into an extensive network of Max-Planck, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz and Leibniz Institutes located in and around Potsdam. The focus area “Functional Soft Matter” at UP combines various research activities on smart flexible materials. Within this area, the Applied Condensed-Matter Physics Group (ACMP, Chair: Prof. Dr Reimund Gerhard, Fellow of the American Physical Society (FAPS), Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FIEEE)) works on electro-active dielectrics – and in particular on dielectric elastomers (also called electro-electrets) – on space-charge electrets, on cellular and multi-layer Ferro- and piezo-electrets, on dipolar Ferro-, pyro- and piezo-electric polymer electrets, and on polymer nano-composites.
